As newcomers to 4×4 we felt encouraged, respected and enthralled throughout, and cannot recommend Dan highly enough as the perfect person to help you discover and improve your skills.

Highly recommended to anyone new to off-roading in particular, as we now have so much more confidence in where to off-road and how to use the off roading functions the jeep has to navigate different types of terrain.

Had the most informative and exciting day with Dan from Torr Overland – I now feel ready to tackle some local green lanes armed with everything I need to know about my vehicle and the area.

Who it’s for

Know your 4×4

Own a Land Rover or 4×4 and not totally sure what half the controls do? You’re not alone, and you’re in the right place. Most people who come out with me have a properly capable vehicle and have never had the chance to use it.

It’s a one-to-one day, so it suits complete beginners, new owners, and anyone planning their first green laning or overland trip. No big groups, no being left at the back, no question too basic.

What you’ll learn:

  • How your 4×4 works and why, from low range to diff locks
  • Hill descent, and how to climb and descend safely
  • Recovery points, and what to do if you get stuck
  • How to read the terrain in front of you
  • Where you can legally drive, and how to plan your own adventures

How the day works

  1. Book online. I’ll be in touch to arrange the date and talk through what you’d like to get out of the day.
  2. I plan your route around you: the scenery, the variety and the level of challenge. Every experience is unique.
  3. We meet near Haytor on Dartmoor, usually around 10am, and start with a briefing on how your 4×4 works.
  4. Then out onto the green lanes until around 2pm, at your pace, with regular stops to stretch your legs, eat and chat.

Exact times can be arranged to suit you. If the weather turns properly wild, I’ll adjust the route on the day.

Is my 4×4 suitable?

The day is in your own vehicle, so it needs full-time four-wheel drive, low range gearing and all-terrain tyres, along with a valid MOT, road tax and insurance. “Soft-roaders” without low range aren’t suitable.

Recent guests have brought classic and new Defenders, a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and an Ineos Grenadier. Not sure about yours? Send me the make and model and I’ll let you know.

Your guide

Hi, I’m Dan

I’m a LANTRA certified 4×4 and Green Lane Association affiliated tour guide, and I’ve been driving and exploring in 4x4s all my life. I drive Dartmoor’s lanes in my own Discovery 4, and film a lot of it for the Torr Overland YouTube channel.

Every route I use is legal, and I’ll show you how to keep it that way when you’re out on your own.

Sunset over Dartmoor

Off the road.

Off the grid.

We love the sense of adventure and exploring the world. There are so many places to see and experience, many of which can only be accessed with dedicated 4×4’s. We want to share what we love with you, helping to give you the knowledge and confidence to go create your own adventures.

Questions about the experience

I haven't driven off-road before. Can I still take part?

Absolutely. The day is built around beginners and owners who want to understand their vehicle. It’s one-to-one, so we go at your pace.

Will my vehicle get damaged?

It’s highly unlikely. The routes are curated and the driving is careful, with an overlander’s mindset rather than “let’s get stuck”. Lanes can be overgrown, though, so some light scuffing is possible.

What should I bring?

Your phone and charger, at least half a tank of fuel, a camera, water, snacks and a picnic-style lunch.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Only the most extreme weather stops a day in a vehicle. If it’s particularly bad, I’ll adjust the route on the day.

Can I buy the experience as a gift?

Yes. You’ll get a gift voucher by email, and they have 12 months to choose a date. See 4×4 experience gifts.

Torr
